Potential Causes for Dryer Not Heating

Typically, when your dryer is broken, it is not just dead. It is not as if you press the button on your dryer to start a new cycle and nothing happens. Often, your dryer spins but no heat is produced. There are a number of potential causes for a dryer with no heat.

  1. An unplugged cord
  2. A dirty lint screen
  3. Oversized loads
  4. A tripped breaker
  5. A clogged dryer vent
  6. Overly wet clothes
  7. A blown thermal fuse
  8. A broken dryer heating element

Solutions for Dryer Not Heating

Of the eight potential causes listed above, the first four are relatively simple fixes while the others are more extensive.

  1. An unplugged cord: Make sure all of the cords behind your dryer are properly plugged in. Similarly, make sure your dryer door is closed and latching properly because this will also stop the dryer from functioning.
  2. A dirty lint screen: We recommend cleaning your lint screen after every load because built-up lint reduces airflow and impairs your dryer’s heating abilities.
  3. Oversized loads: Your loads may be too large or the items in your load may be unbalanced. Make sure that you don’t mix large and small items, and only fill your dryer drum up to 75% full.
  4. A tripped breaker: Your circuit breaker may trip for a number of reasons, including too many items being plugged into one circuit. If your breaker continues to trip, it may be possible you are trying to run too many appliances on one circuit. Go to your electric panel, reset the breaker associated with your dryer, and wait a few minutes before running your dryer again. If the problem persists, you may need to call an electrical professional.
  5. A clogged dryer vent: This is another example of lint impairing your dryer’s function. Turn on your dryer, and go outside to your exhaust vent. If there is little airflow or low temperature airflow, you need to clean out or replace your venting. It is probably best to call a service technician for this.
  6. Overly wet clothes: Are you putting overly wet clothes in your dryer? Wet clothes create excess moisture in the drum of your dryer that makes it difficult to achieve a thorough dry. The culprit here might actually be your washing machine. Your washer should be effectively draining and spinning clothes so that clothes are only slightly damp at the end of a cycle. You may need to use an extra spin cycle or call a service technician to look at your washer.
  7. A blown thermal fuse: A thermal fuse is a safety device that prevents overheating and fires. When one of these fuses blows, they shut down the dryer and must be replaced. A thermal fuse is typically located next to the exhaust vent, and you may be able to replace it yourself.
  8. A broken dryer heating element: A heating element is responsible for heating the air in your dryer’s drum and getting clothes warm and dry. If no other suggestions work, it is likely that your dryer heating element is broken. The heating element alone may cost anywhere from $25 to $250, plus the cost of labor.

Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Dryer

Your trusty dryer has been a faithful companion in making laundry day a breeze. However, like any appliance, dryers have a finite lifespan. It's essential to keep an eye out for signs that indicate it's time to bid farewell to your old unit and invest in a new one. Ignoring these warning signals could lead to frustrating breakdowns, inefficiency, and even safety hazards.

  1. Age and Excessive Repairs: As a general rule, dryers have an average lifespan of 10-15 years. If your dryer has surpassed this milestone or requires frequent repairs, it might be more cost-effective to replace it with a newer model. Aging appliances tend to become less efficient, leading to longer drying times and increased energy consumption.
  2. Inefficiency and High Utility Bills: Have you noticed your clothes taking longer to dry lately? An inefficient dryer can be a telltale sign that it's time for an upgrade. Older models may struggle to maintain consistent heat levels, leading to extended drying cycles. This inefficiency not only wastes time but also increases your energy bills.
  3. Excessive Noise and Vibrations: Unusual noises, such as loud banging or squeaking, can indicate mechanical issues within your dryer. Excessive vibrations could also point to worn-out parts. While some problems can be repaired, persistent noise and vibrations may suggest it's time to consider a replacement.
  4. Foul Odors or Burning Smells: If your dryer emits foul odors or burning smells during operation, it's a clear red flag. This could be caused by lint buildup, malfunctioning heating elements, or electrical issues. Such problems not only affect performance but can also pose safety hazards, making it crucial to replace your dryer promptly.

Being aware of the signs that indicate it's time to replace your dryer can save you from inconvenience, inefficiency, and potential safety risks. If you're experiencing multiple issues, your dryer is old, or repairs are becoming frequent, it's wise to consider investing in a new model. Remember, a well-functioning and energy-efficient dryer can make your laundry routine smoother and more cost-effective in the long run.
