Double Wall OvensWhat is a Double Oven?
Aside from the obvious that double ovens are two stacked, built-in baking appliances, here’s what else you should know about these appliances.
Fuel Source
Double ovens are available exclusively as electric appliances. However, most professional chefs agree that baking with electric, radiant heat is superior to a gas oven.
Configuration
Double wall ovens come in a variety of configurations that serve both aesthetic and user purposes. A few popular designs on the market include:
- Drop door double wall ovens that offer a traditional look and function
- Side-swing double wall ovens that grant easier access to items inside
- French door double wall ovens that look stylish and also provide better reach to items inside
Size & Capacity
The majority of double wall ovens are 30” wide, or the size of a standard oven cutout. While not as common, some manufacturers do make 27” and 24” double wall ovens for smaller kitchens.
Models that are 30” wide roughly have twice the capacity as a single wall oven or a range oven. However, we’ve found that many 24” double wall ovens don’t offer more capacity than a single range oven. In fact, some models are smaller in overall capacity.
On one hand, you’ll still be able to multitask better than with a single oven, but larger cookie trays and casserole dishes might be difficult to fit inside the cavity. In any case, we always recommend measuring your kitchen before considering your buying options.
5 Benefits of Using a Double Oven
Even if your household doesn’t do a lot of cooking, it’s hard to dismiss the value an oven has in the kitchen. However, adding another full-size oven to a kitchen setup isn’t exactly cheap, so why are these appliances considered part of a dream kitchen design? Most of it comes down to convenience.
- Cooking Versatility
Cooking is a science, one that often requires precise temperatures. For instance, baking a holiday ham might have you turn the oven to one setting, while everyone’s favorite pie calls for another temperature setting. That’s not an issue if you have a double wall oven, which allows users to run each appliance as different settings simultaneously.
- Enjoy Dinner Sooner
That also means you don’t have to linger around to start cooking your dishes. Once you get a hang of multitasking with a double oven, you can deliver both savory dishes and desserts to the table at once.
- Easier Access
Safety in the kitchen is essential, yet burns are one of the most common kitchen injuries. Often, that’s a result of an awkward oven placement that makes retrieving items difficult and unsafe. Users should still be careful when using a double oven, but because there are two oven levels to choose from, the setup makes it easier for users of different heights to cook out of one that is best for each individual.
- Flavors Don’t Transfer
Fish pie, anyone? It may be tempting to cook two different foods at the same time in an oven to save time, but doing so can result in foods transferring flavors. That’s not a problem with double oven, though, since each compartment is separate.
- Better for Double Cooks
Cooking with a partner has tons of benefits, but then again, a crowded kitchen is a quick recipe for disaster. That is, unless you have a double oven, where you and your partner can cook each part of dinner separately without interrupting each other’s flow.

What to Consider
With that said, upgrading to a double wall oven setup comes with a few caveats that every buyer should take into consideration.
❌ More cabinet space is needed for a double oven
❌ Double ovens cost more than single ovens at around $3,700–$11,000+
❌ Double ovens might not be easy for all users to cook in
3 of Our Favorite Double Oven Picks
With over 75 models to choose from, our experts at Bekins had their work cut out for them when it came to narrowing down the most practical double wall ovens for our Grand Rapid appliance shoppers. In the end, these three brands offered affordable double oven options avid home cooks should consider.
GE® 30" Stainless Steel Electric Built In Double Oven

With a solid 4.6/5 star rating from over 1,275 product testers, this GE double oven is a highly recommended option worth considering. While we would have loved a convection baking mode, users will still get great results with 10-pass baking elements that deliver even heat throughout. Plus, with 10 total cubic feet of capacity, there’s no shortage of space for pies, poultry, and pastries. Chances are that you’ll be multitasking in this oven, so the addition of Wi-Fi programming makes managing meal prep easier, which is a major plus in our books!
Top GE JTD3000SNSS oven review: “I recommend this double oven to anyone who loves to cook.”
Cafe™ Minimal 30" Platinum Glass Built In Convection Double Electric Wall Oven

At about $2,000 more, this Cafe double oven is pricier than our GE recommendation, but that also means an increase in function. For instance, this smart double oven can connect to a personal device to access an in-oven camera, where you can see actual cooking progress without having to be in the kitchen. The same Wi-Fi compatibility also offers voice activation, which is nifty if not convenient. But most importantly, you get tons of performance, from the True European convection to the Air Fry mode, all while matching the 10 cubic-foot capacity as our first pick.
Top Café CTD90DM2NS5 oven review: “The Cafe Platinum Glass double ovens are the best!”
Bosch Benchmark® Series 30" Stainless Steel Electric Built In Double Oven

This top-rated Bosch double oven has the highest score in our roundup with a near-perfect 4.8/5. That’s in part to its unique side-swing door design that offers an easier, safer user experience. And if you weren’t aware, many double ovens only offer convection in one compartment, but not this model, which features Convection Pro technology with a third heating element and fan for better heat distribution.
Top Bosch HBLP651RUC oven review: “I selected this oven because the doors open to the side, not down in front. No bending over a hot oven door to put food in or take it out.”
To sum it up, double wall ovens are better for multitasking, saving time, and mastering the art of dinnertime presentation, but these luxuries come at a higher price point and more kitchen space. Even then, dual wall ovens are useful tools to have in the kitchen and they also increase the value of a kitchen. We’ve reviewed three picks from our catalog, but remember, we have over 75 models to choose from. Explore one of our picks or others today by shopping Bekins online or in-store!
