When an appliance stops working the way it should, it’s tempting to think, “How complicated can it be?” A dryer tumbles, heats, and moves air. A refrigerator cools. A washer fills and spins. Simple, right?
Not always.
At Bekins, we’ve been serving West Michigan families for decades, providing appliances, electronics, parts, and expert service. If you’re new to Bekins, our philosophy is simple: the right product, the right part, and the right advice can save you time, money, and frustration. This installment of our Save a Service Call series explains why replacement parts matter more than most people realize.

The Extreme (But True) Dryer Story
One of our longtime service technicians once shared a story that perfectly explains the issue. A customer complained that their dryer took forever to dry clothes. On paper, everything checked out:
- It was heating ✔
- It was moving air ✔
- The drum was spinning ✔
So why weren’t the clothes drying?
This was back when the dryer did not have a glass door to see in. After multiple service calls, the real clue came from the homeowner: “It started happening after my husband replaced the belt.”
That was the answer.
Instead of using the correct dryer belt, a LAWNMOWER BELT had been installed. It fit well enough to spin the drum, but it changed the drum’s Rotations Per Minute (RPM) speed. The dryer was tumbling just fast enough that centrifugal force pinned the clothes to the drum wall. They never fell through the center, which meant hot air couldn’t flow through the load.
The result? Long dry times and wasted energy.

Why the Right Replacement Parts Matter
Modern appliances are engineered with precise specifications. Every part plays a role in performance, efficiency, and safety. Using the wrong replacement part can cause:
- Poor performance: longer dry times, uneven washing, inconsistent temperatures
- Higher energy usage and utility bills
- Excess wear and tear on motors, bearings, and other components
- Repeat service calls that could have been avoided
Even using the correct part incorrectly can create problems.
Appliances Are Systems, Not Just Machines
A dryer doesn’t just “spin.” It spins at a specific speed so clothes lift and fall. A refrigerator fan doesn’t just move air, it moves exactly enough air to maintain consistent temperatures. Washers rely on precise timing, water levels, and spin speeds to clean properly.
When one variable changes then the whole system is affected.
