Bekins Appliances & Electronics: Recycling for a Better Tomorrow in 2025

by The Experts at Bekins

At Bekins, sustainability isn’t a buzzword—it’s a commitment we’ve honored for over a decade. As we look back on 2025, we’re proud to share how our recycling and donation efforts are making a real difference for our community and the planet.

Our 2025 Recycling Impact—By the Numbers

In 2025 alone, Bekins recycled an incredible 725,093 pounds (more than 360 tons) of materials, keeping the equivalent of 65 fully loaded garbage trucks out of landfills.

Here’s how that breaks down:

  • 112,265 pounds of cardboard: Enough to fill more than 42 school buses
  • 31,795 pounds of styrofoam: Enough to fill the average home more than three times
  • 573,780 pounds of appliances: Weighing more than a train locomotive
  • 945 pounds of paper: Saving approximately 16 trees

A Decade of Sustainability Leadership

Since 2015, Bekins has focused on recycling or repurposing more than 90% of all waste generated at our facilities.

Over that time, we’ve diverted 4,376,667 pounds of material from landfills, including:

  • 3,411,183 pounds of sheet metal
  • 903,857 pounds of paper and cardboard
  • 54,554 pounds of plastics, electronics, copper wire, foam, styrofoam, and pallets

Behind these results is a real investment of time, money, organization, and dedicated warehouse space. At Bekins, recycling at this scale doesn’t just happen—it takes thoughtful planning, employee training, and a strong, ongoing commitment to our operations. We’re happy to make these investments because reducing our carbon footprint is important to us, to our customers, and to our West Michigan community.

Environmental Benefits That Matter

Our long-term recycling efforts have resulted in meaningful environmental conservation:

  • 3,276,614 gallons of water saved (According to National Geographic, producing one pound of cotton can take about 100 gallons of water)
  • 2,967,898 kWh of electricity conserved
  • 308,342 gallons of oil saved through plastic recycling
  • 6,267,396 pounds of air pollution reduced
  • 8,533 cubic yards of landfill space preserved
  • 7,667 trees saved, supporting cleaner air and healthier ecosystems

Giving Back Through Appliance Donation

Sustainability isn’t just about recycling—it’s also about reuse. Many appliances we haul away are still in good working condition. These units are donated to families in need through LOVE INC of Muskegon County’s Appliance Ministry, helping neighbors while reducing waste.
