Bekins and LG Appliances have teamed up to positively impact our West Michigan community through a program called the Kalamazoo Attainable Homes Partnership (KAHP).
What is the KAHP?
The Kalamazoo Home Builders Association (HBA), Kalamazoo Neighborhood Service (KNHS), and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) have teamed up to tackle the housing crisis in Kalamazoo’s core neighborhoods. In many of these neighborhoods, construction costs exceed the areas appraised values needed for a mortgage, meaning potential buyers—many of who are first-time buyers - face an ‘appraisal gap’ of upwards of tens of thousands of dollars, ultimately making homeownership inaccessible. The KAHP aims to re-invest in Kalamazoo’s core neighborhoods with new construction to boost appraised values. The long-term goal is to make new construction, remodeling, and re-investment in residential properties economically viable in those neighborhoods.
To do this, HBA builder members are selected to build a set number of houses in each round with an emphasis on quality and energy efficiency to keep monthly energy and maintenance costs down. KNHS identifies qualified applicants interested in purchasing these homes, and works with them through the home buying process, with LISC helping to cover any appraisal gaps. The results are impeccably crafted, energy-efficient homes for sale at attainable prices in some of Kalamazoo’s most underserved areas.
When the KAHP asked for “Champions” to supply affordable goods and services, LG partnered with Bekins to champion the home appliances.
The result is beautiful appliances and a quality installation.
We would like to thank all organizations for their wonderful contributions to this project which we are sure will make a lasting impact on the people chosen to live in these homes and the surrounding area.
